It’s common for us, as society, to know OCD from the outside looking in. Maybe we’ve seen it on TV, movies, or seen behaviors that resemble the common features including: checking, washing, or repeating. Those are all considered compulsions also known as rituals. Rituals are a part of OCD which helps the person struggling with OCD feel better. However, it’s false advertising because, as the observer, you aren’t seeing the full scope of what it’s like to live with OCD, and, as the individual with OCD, rituals take time, energy and life away from you. They may provide relief momentarily but the OCD never truly leaves you alone without asking you to complete another ritual.
Here’s a list of compulsions. Most individuals with OCD have more than 1!
- Counting, Praying, Review, Undoing (mental (internal) compulsions)
- Situation Avoidance
